Five local schools in Hela to receive repairs

More than 750 children from five primary schools in the Hides area of Hela Province will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of a school infrastructure development activity supported by Esso Highlands Limited, operator of the PNG LNG Project.

The five primary schools, which include Juni, Mananda, Tukupawi, Idauwi and St. Paul’s, will receive upgrades to classrooms and existing student amenities.

Many factors were considered to determine which schools would receive help. These schools were chosen for this support based on their proximity to Esso Highlands Limited operating facilities, but mostly because despite the deteriorating condition of infrastructure, they continued to provide a consistent education service to their community.

Esso Highlands Limited Community Investment Lead, Shabaka Gibson, said investing in education is a key priority for Esso Highlands Limited.

“We recognise education is the cornerstone to Papua New Guinea’s future.

“These improvements will help improve access to basic education. In addition, this will help the children in these areas realize their education potential and as a result, strengthen their communities.

“Esso Highlands Limited will continue to help Papua New Guinea secure its future, through education.” Mr Gibson concluded.

Upgrades to all five schools will be finished in the next couple of months.

Esso Highlands Limited has been providing support to schools in the Project area since construction started in 2010. This included providing schools with desks, and learning and teaching materials.
